Hello Everyone,
This month we are going to explore scaling Agile/Scrum with Todd Olson from Rally Software. Dinner will be provided by Principle Solutions Group. Please plan to arrive no later than 5:45 for sign-in. Details below.
5:45- 6:00 Sign-in (IHG Lobby) Directions below.
6:00 - 6:30 - Dinner and Networking
6:30 - 7:30 - Beyond the Program: Scaling Agile to Portfolios, Todd Olson - Rally Software
For many teams, project-level and program-level practices are sufficient. However, as agile becomes more and more mainstream larger organizations are challenged to understand how agile scales to meet portfolio-level needs. These needs include:
- Aligning development activities to strategic themes
- Formalizing the process to fund development work including "inspect-adapt" for budgets
- Reporting at the portfolio-level
- Integrating portfolio-level practices with existing Agile teams
This talk will explore adding a portfolio-level process to existing practices to help assess the entire lifecycle from idea to delivery. Portfolio management transitions organizations from answering simply "are we developing things right" to "are we developing the right things?".
Meeting Location
The location is right off of Ashford Dunwoody in the Ravinia office complex. From I-285 E/W take the Ashford Dunwoody exit, and go north. Turn east onto Ravinia drive just north of the interstate. You will pass the Crown Plaza hotel on the left, take the next left at the Ravinia Club sign. The entrance to Building 3 will be on your right. Go straight past the Building 3 entrance and park in the garage directly ahead.
The building is secured so we will meet in the Building Three lobby and go upstairs as a group at 5:45 sharp - there is a set of couches between the security desk and the garden area just inside the main entrance. Please let me know if you will arrive after 5:45 so we can arrange to have someone meet you and bring you upstairs.
Let me try this again.....Speaker knew his topic, provided options regarding approach, backed those up with references, and generally provoked thought. He needed a bibliography (which he said would be provided to Michael to be distributed to the attendees) and a description of what he defined as Portfolio.

Lot's of good information presented plus some helpful books referenced so we can dig deeper if we want.

The presenter touched very important topics, and was very good.
I think that he went a little bit off the message when he started to talk about techniques to select features to go in a product. My impression is that would be more related to Product Management and less to Portfolio Management.

Great presentation and discussion. I had hoped to see more about reporting at a portfolio level - what kinds of things can be rolled up to an executive view to demonstrate progress among a grouping of agile initiatives?

Although the speaker is obviously intelligent and dynamic, I had trouble following his talk and understanding how it related to scaling to Portfolios. Each of the nuggets he discussed was interesting in and of itself and I suspect that he could have spoken longer on each of them, but I couldn't see how they led to the talk topic. Still, if he gave another talk I would come.

Excellent! As a newbie the presentation was a bit over my head (but I got a lot of it anyway), but meeting & networking with people inspired me. Thank you, Michael, and all.
